The Apple-Tree Wassail is a translucent silhouette designed and illustrated by Vija Docherty for Conscious Craft — the January panel in our Conscious Craft Seasonal Series. It fits the Toverlux Magic Lamp, the Window Frame and the Het Houtlokeal Season Lamp (all sold separately). Lit from behind, the winter woodland scene shows through in soft colour.
Each silhouette in the series follows the turning of the year at the edge of Ashdown Forest, the setting for a short story we publish each month. January's scene shows the children, Edith and JK, drinking warm apple tea while Bracken the gnome sings to an old apple tree. A hedgehog, a fox and a robin gather close, and snow lies over the woods.
The scene draws on the old English custom of wassailing — singing to the apple trees in deep winter to wish them a good harvest in the year ahead. The robin nods to the tradition of leaving toast in the branches for the birds.
