Amy from @tillystoys on the Magic of Toverlux Lamps
The Toverlux lamp is one of the most beautiful ideas. It is the very embodiment of a magical childhood. My daughter, Tilly, is 7 and it immediately became an important part of her bedtime routine – she chooses a silhouette each night, based on her mood, the season and often what she hopes to dream about that night. While the lamp mostly lives in her bedroom, sometimes I am allowed to borrow it to use as part of a seasonal display or invitation to play. I see a second lamp in our future – one for her and one for me!
To really add to the magic, you can create your own silhouettes using the DIY Silhouette Paper. Tilly and I had a brilliant time experimenting with different mediums. We discovered that some look better in the day time and some look better lit up at night with the lamp.
Watercolours look beautiful in the day and I really enjoyed the opportunity to be creative and create something special. Unfortunately, they lose their definition and colour once lit up at night.
Kitpas crayons are easy to use and the finished silhouette looks vibrant and striking in the day. It doesn’t look quite as good at night and the crayon effect on the paper is quite visible. As a way to display a piece of art by a child though it’s a lovely and effective. We now have several fun crayon silhouettes created proudly by Tilly.
Tilly enjoyed ripping up pieces of tissue paper and sticking them into a heart outline. This looks really effective in the day. The colours lose a bit of their sharpness once lit up but this one remains Tilly’s all-time favourite silhouette.
Felt tip looks good day and night. We got a bit creative and experimented with sweeping a wet paintbrush over the finished silhouette. I’m not quite sure why but when creativity strikes a seven year old, you just have to go with it! Over all it made quite a good effect.
We tried coloured pencils and these do not work! The picture almost completely disappears once lit up by the lamp.
Now we’ve discovered it, I know that a Toverlux lamp will always be in our home. At the moment it is a special and treasured nightlight in Tilly’s bedroom. Top tip: if you hold the on/off button on the lamp it can brighten/dim. When she no longer wants a nightlight, it will be part of our home with the silhouettes changed to reflect the seasons. It is a very special lamp.
