Packing for Adventure – At Home or Away
Travelling is probably one of my greatest passions. I love everything about it – the anticipation, the adventure, even the journey itself. Whether we’re setting off in the car, catching a train, or heading to the airport, I always enjoy putting together a little collection of creative bits and playful treasures to take with us. It’s become a kind of ritual – one that brings a sense of rhythm and calm to the chaos of getting out the door.
But here’s the truth: you don’t have to go far – or even go away – to find adventure. Some of our best summer memories have happened in the garden with a slackline, indoors building a den from silks and chairs, or simply watching the clouds from a picnic blanket. These longer, looser days are perfect for slow, meaningful play – wherever you are.
So whether you're heading abroad, staying local, or enjoying a mix of both, here are a few of the things I love to pack (or pull out at home) to keep curious minds and busy hands engaged, rain or shine.
For the Journey
I always like to have a few things on hand to make travel time smoother—for everyone’s sake! Compact, tactile, and mess-free is the goal.
-
Shashibo cube – for fidgety hands and satisfying transformations
-
Play dough or Stockmar modelling wax – great for grounding sensory play
-
Knitting fork and wool – a rhythmic, calming option for older kids
-
Cat’s cradle string – always a hit, and easy to teach
-
Magnetic travel games – no missing pieces, just fun on the go
Games that Go with You
Perfect for downtime at restaurants, holiday cottages, or cosy evenings after a long day of exploring.
-
Dominoes and classic cards – tried and true favourites
-
Quicktionary or a simple family card game – easy to learn, quick to play, and great for mixed ages
Creative Bits & Bobs
I love packing small craft supplies that can be pulled out for slow mornings or quiet afternoons.
-
A pencil case stocked with drawing bits
-
Small Carving Kit (with adult supervision, of course!)
-
Mini craft kits – small enough to pack, big enough to spark imagination
Activity Books & Quiet Play
For those dreamy in-between moments—lounging in a tent, picnicking on the beach, or when it’s just too hot to move.
-
Your Wild Activity Book (a family favourite for age 7+)
-
Skipping ropes and yo-yos – classic movement play
-
Spin tops and small toys for gentle, mindful moments
-
A Scrunch bucket – never too old for collecting shells or stones
I think part of what I love most about packing for holidays is imagining all the things we’ll get to do together. Whether we’re hiking, crafting, swimming, or stuck in a thunderstorm—it’s all part of the magic. I try to keep it simple, but intentional. A few well-chosen things that encourage connection, creativity, and just being in the moment.
Wherever you are this summer, I hope it’s filled with play, possibility, and moments of wonder.
Wishing you all a joyful summer,
Funmi
