The Story of Felt Flower Fairies: A Journey of Art, Independence, and Heart
In a quiet corner of Romania, the magic of Waldorf education sparked a movement that would shape not just classrooms but lives. It all began in 1990, when Waldorf education first arrived in the country, bringing its values of creativity, nature, and imagination. Six years later, in 1996, our small atelier was born—an extension of this philosophy, built on the belief that toys should be made with love, care, and natural materials.
At the time, I was a mother of two children in Waldorf kindergarten. Inspired by the workshops I attended on doll-making and pedagogy, I teamed up with two other women to create soft dolls. These weren’t just any dolls—they were simple yet soulful, with soft woolen hair and blank faces that left room for a child’s imagination to bring them to life.
As our journey unfolded, visits to Waldorf schools and enchanting toy shops in Germany and the UK introduced me to something truly magical: felt flower fairies. These delicate creations, perfect for seasonal tables and storytelling, stole my heart. Slowly, they became the focus of our craft, alongside tiny dollhouse dolls that brought imaginative play to life.
Over the years, our team grew. Two remarkable women joined us and shaped the atelier into what it is today. Irma, with her background in production management, brought organisation and structure, while Lucia, a gifted artist, became the creative force behind our fairies and dolls. She not only designed them but taught and guided us, ensuring every piece was infused with artistry.
From the very beginning, we knew our work had to be about more than creating beautiful things. We wanted to give opportunities to those who needed them most—retired women with small pensions, mothers staying home with their young children, and caregivers looking after loved ones. Even our paper balls are made in collaboration with a workshop that employs people with disabilities.
Today, our team is made up of about 20 talented women who work from home, and two others who carefully pack and check each creation. These women come from all walks of life, but they share a gift for needlework and an eye for artistry. Together, we handcraft every fairy, doll, and decoration, pouring love and care into each piece.
Over the past 27 years, our little atelier has grown into a global name. Known as AmbroDolls or Eco Flower Fairies in the U.S., our creations have traveled to customers on four continents. Each piece is a miniature work of art, handmade in small batches, and designed to bring a touch of beauty and warmth into homes.
For us, the greatest reward is the joy our creations bring to others. The smile on a customer’s face, the sparkle in their eyes—these moments remind us why we do what we do.
We hope our felt flower fairies and dollhouse dolls carry more than just their delicate beauty. We want them to be messengers of artistry, quality, and heart—little reminders of the power of handmade work to connect us all.
