Craft Ideas For Kids | Felt Flower Crown
Inspired by the beautiful royal wedding, my little girl and I decided to make our own royal crown. She did not take part in the making process but chose all the colours and enjoyed watching as it was being created. She was so excited when it was finished and wears it all the time.
This craft idea is great for older children to make on their own; it will introduce them to sewing skills, needle felting and creating a simple paper pattern.
You will need: A3 sheet of paper, scissors, ruler, pencil, wool felt sheet approximately 45cm long, embroidery thread, needle, felt flowers and elastic ribbon, felting needle, foam pad and our bedha wool or roving wool.
1 - Draw a long, thin rectangle approximately 45cm by 5cm, fold in half.
2 - Cut a wave shape along one edge.
3 - This is the pattern for your crown. It should look like the image below.
4 - Fold the felt and pin your pattern along the edge of the fold. I am using a piece of felt that is 45cm x 45cm; I folded it diagonally down the middle which made a triangle. I pinned my pattern along the edge of the fold. Cut around your pattern.
5 - Fold the above shape along the crease and iron. You should have two layers of felt, this will give shape to your crown and make it sturdy.
6 - Using embroidery thread, sew along the side and top edge of your crown using blanket stitch. You can view lots of great clips on how to do this on YouTube. My favourite is a short clip by Red Ted Art. I am not great at this but give it a go; if it is uneven it will add a certain charm!
7 - We wanted to add a bit of colour and depth to the crown so we decided to needle felt some coloured wool along the middle. This is an fun, easy and safe introduction to needle felting your older children can try. To needle felt, place thin wisps of wool roving along the crown, place on to a foam pad and using a felting needle start to prick the wool into the felt backing until it fuses with it and forms a coloured texture.
8 - We added felt flowers onto the length of our crown, you can either make these or buy ready-made ones. Cut elasticated ribbon (approximately 5cm depending on how large you want your crown to be) and sew at either end of your crown to join the ends together.
